DELIVERY OF SPIRAL BLUE PAYLOAD FOR WARATAH SEED

Waratah Seed has received our second payload – Spiral Blue’s Space Edge-1 (SE-1).

Spiral Blue is leading the next generation of Earth observation services. Joint first prize winner in the Waratah Seed WS-1 Payload Competition, Spiral Blue have delivered an innovative Space Edge Computing solution.

Spiral Blue’s edge computer, Space Edge-1 (SE-1), is a version upgrade from its prototype Space Edge Zero (SEZ) computers launched into orbit mid-2021 and early 2022.  In the WS-1 mission the SE-1 will undergo LEO radiation testing as well as improving processes around tasking, execution, uplink, and downlink that will enable in-orbit image processing and delivery of near real-time Earth observation data.

“This mission will be the second or third Space Edge One computer flown by Spiral Blue, after our successful launch earlier this year. This will provide us a unique opportunity to test out some of our cutting-edge applications and algorithms on the most up to date hardware/software we'll have access to.” – James Buttenshaw, Spiral Blue Chief Technology Officer

SE-1 was developed by James Buttenshaw, Charlie Wilson and Dan Miller. Their Space Edge Computers enable the use of proprietary Machine Learning algorithms to process imagery on board satellites. These include bushfire detection, vessel detection, canopy mapping, water body mapping, cloud clipping, image compression and cropping. By developing industry leading hardware in conjunction with cutting edge AI technology, Spiral Blue is solving the downlink problem, making Earth observation more accessible.

“Waratah Seed is very pleased to have Spiral Blue and its SE-1 edge computer onboard the WS-1 CubeSat - we look forward to helping them achieve their goals.”
Iver Cairns, Director of Waratah Seed.

“The fact that Waratah Seed is a wholly Australian mission is extremely exciting.  To be developing this capability in Australia is amazing and it's an honour to be a part of that.” – James Buttenshaw, Spiral Blue Chief Technology Officer
